The St. Vigeans Sculptured Stone Museum is only open a few days each Summer so I was pleased to get along to see the stones again.

Eating You Up Amebiasis, infection with the parasitic…

Eating You Up

Amebiasis, infection with the parasitic eukaryote Entamoeba histolytica, affects around 50 million people worldwide, causing symptoms ranging from diarrhoea to liver abscesses. Entamoeba (pictured, in green) gobbles up red blood cells (in red), and microbes in its host’s gut, engulfing them by phagocytosis. This process requires its cytoskeleton, the network of protein filaments giving cells structure, to be very dynamic, changing shape as needed. Key to this flexibility is a protein named EhP3, one of a large family of eukaryotic proteins, the 14-3-3 proteins, which accumulates at the ‘phagocytic cups’, where the cell membrane curves to surround target cells. Downregulating EhP3 reduces the rate of phagocytosis, as EhP3 acts as a hub for organising cytoskeletal rearrangements, binding to many other proteins which in turn interact with actin fibres in the cytoskeleton. Understanding these protein interactions sheds light on a crucial process for this parasite, potentially uncovering targets for future treatments.

Eagle Aurora over Norway
Image Credit & Copyright: Bjørn Jørgensen

Explanation: What’s that in the sky? An aurora. A large coronal mass ejection occurred on our Sun five days before this 2012 image was taken, throwing a cloud of fast moving electrons, protons, and ions toward the Earth. Although most of this cloud passed above the Earth, some of it impacted our Earth’s magnetosphere and resulted in spectacular auroras being seen at high northern latitudes. Featured here is a particularly photogenic auroral corona captured above Grotfjord, Norway. To some, this shimmering green glow of recombining atmospheric oxygen might appear as a large eagle, but feel free to share what it looks like to you. Although the Sun is near Solar Minimum, streams of the solar wind continue to impact the Earth and create impressive auroras visible even last week.

Teeth Tell Tales We’ve all experienced the unusual sensation…

Teeth Tell Tales

We’ve all experienced the unusual sensation of wiggling out our wobbly baby teeth. So too would the two owners of these milk teeth, who lost them in a remote region of north eastern Siberia 31,000 years ago. Their discovery reveals the existence of a previously unknown group of people who lived there during the last Ice Age, surviving the harsh climate by keeping on the move and hunting big woolly beasts like mammoths and bison. DNA analysis of their remains show that these people are closely related to Native Americans and are likely to be the missing link connecting ancient Siberians to the first people to arrive in the Americas across what is now the Bering Strait. But although these milk teeth reveal fascinating new details about the journeys our human ancestors made around the world, they still can’t tell us whether the Tooth Fairy ever came to claim them.

Proton-M carrying Spektr-RG launch

A Proton-M launch vehicle, with a DM-03 upper stage, launched Spektr-RG astrophysical space observatory from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, on 13 July 2019, at 12:30:57 UTC (18:30 local time).

Spektr-RG launch

Spektr-RG (Спектр-Рентген-Гамма, Spectrum X-ray Gamma, SRG) is an astrophysical space observatory, aimed at studying the Universe in the X-ray band of the electromagnetic spectrum from the Lagrange point L2 of the Sun-Earth system, 1.5 million kilometers away from Earth.

Spektr-RG X-ray observatory

Spektr-RG is a joint project between Roscosmos and DLR, the Russian and German space agencies. The mission will conduct an all-sky X-ray survey, observing galaxies and large-scale galactic clusters to help astronomers examine the role of dark energy and dark matter in the evolution of the universe.

Spektr-RG description

Spektr-RG is a Russian project with German participation, aimed at creating an orbital astrophysical observatory for studying the Universe in the X-ray wavelength range. The main goal of the project is to build a map of the whole sky, on which all the largest clusters of galaxies (about a hundred thousand) will be marked, and also to register about three million supermassive black holes.
