Wemyss Caves and Pictish Symbols, Fife, Scotland, 28.12.19.

At first light this morning I paid my first visit to what may well be one of the most overlooked ancient coastal sites in the UK. Wemyss Caves contain the highest known numbers of Pictish symbols in one location in the UK. Spread across five cave systems are large numbers of animals, figures and abstract symbols. These are some of the earliest known Pictish symbols and some date back to the 5th century CE. With the help of the virtual tour site, Wemyss4D, I photographed many of the markings. However, the site is woefully neglected and endangered by vandalism, coastal erosion and poor maintenance.

Pronounced ‘Weems’, pictured markings from the caves above include: a dog or wolf, fish, a bull or cattle, a figure (possibly Thor?) with sacrificial goat and a complex symbol.
