Comet Wirtanen Passes by the Earth

Explanation: Today Comet Wirtanen passes by the Earth. The kilometer-sized dirty snowball orbits the Sun every 5.4 years, ranging as far out as Jupiter and as close in as the Earth. Today Comet 46P/Wirtanen passes within only 31 lunar distances to the Earth, the closest approach in 70 years. If you know where to look (Taurus), you can see the comet through binoculars as an unusual blue smudge. Pictured a week ago, Comet Wirtanen was photographed in the sky beyond an old abandoned church in Skagen, Denmark. The image composite also captures the astrophotographer. After today, the comet will begin to fade as it recedes from the Earth and the Sun.

Description: This pair of confocal micrographs demonstrates how a disease-causing strain of E. coli bacteria brings about diarrhoea by breaking down the waterproof barriers between the cells. The bacteria are seen as small red dots attached to the surface of intestinal cells making tiny pedestals out of one of the cell’s own proteins (bright green). Once attached, the bacteria send signals into the cells, causing the tight junctions (blue) between the cells to break down. Water is then able to seep out between the cells into the intestine, leading to diarrhoea. The image on the left shows an early stage in the process where the tight junctions are still intact and show as continuous blue lines between the cells. The image on the right is taken later in the process, once the tight junctions have broken down. Their remnants appear as blue dots.

Orda Cave is a gypsum crystal cave found underneath the western Ural Mountains. The mouth is near the shore of the Kungur River just outside Orda, Perm Krai in Russia. The cave system stretches over 5.1 kilometres (3.2 mi) with around 4.8 kilometres (3.0 mi) over the overall length being under water.

HiPOD (15 December 2018): In Tikhonravov Crater 


   – Tikhonravov is 386 kilometers in diameter and was named after Mikhail Tikhonravov, a Russian rocket scientist. It’s thought to have once held a giant lake that drained into the 4,500-kilometer long Naktong-Scamander-Mamers lake-chain system. (Alt: 278 km. Black and white is less than 5 km across; enhanced color is less than 1 km.)

Oddendale Double Recumbent Stone Circle, near Shap, Cumbria, 15.12.18.


The hail and freezing conditions made this a bleak but enticing prospect today. Moments after photographing the site, heavy rain sent me in quick retreat. This lovely prehistoric double circle has some beautiful stones covered in lichens and moss.
