Huge Jellyfish Sprite And Halo Above The Caribbean Sea

This jellyfish sprite was preceded by what could be a cosmic ray hit to the camera sensor or maybe something else.

There was no flash before or after the event, so not an airplane or a star. It was 1:00 am so not a satellite or rocket body.

This camera was supplied to me by the Arecibo Observatory for an upcoming meteor campaign in November. The camera is a Watec 902H Ultimate and it is enclosed in a watec weather proof housing with built in heater to prevent fogging of the lens.

Very bright sprite-halo. This was taken using the camera that the Arecibo Observatory sent me. They really enjoyed the jellyfish sprite that I captured with it but once the meteor campaign starts I will have to keep it fixed to their location.

Orcadians, the K15 and the calculator effect

Judging by the Google search terms that are bringing traffic to this and my other blogs, a total newb to the scene is analyzing the Orcadian samples from the HGDP at GEDmatch with my K15 test. Please keep in mind that you will not see coherent results for many of the academic samples available online when using my tests. That’s because I used these samples to source the allele frequencies for the tests. As a result, their ancestry proportions will often be very different from those of other samples from the same ethnic groups that were not used in this way. I call this problem the calculator effect, and it’s described in my blog posts at the links below:

Beware the “calculator effect”
Ancient genomes and the calculator effect

The calculator effect is a very serious problem for most tests, but as far as my tests are concerned, it doesn’t affect anyone except the above mentioned academic samples. Source Eurogenes Genetic Ancestry Project

Oracle of Zeus at Dodona, Greece

Though it

never eclipsed the Oracle of Apollo at Delphi, Dodona gained a reputation far

beyond Greece. In the Argonautica of Apollonius of Rhodes, a retelling of an

older story of Jason and the Argonauts, Jason’s ship, the “Argo”, had

the gift of prophecy, because it contained an oak timber spirited from Dodona.

In c. 290

BCE, King Pyrrhus made Dodona the religious capital of his domain and

beautified it by implementing a series of construction projects (i.e. grandly

rebuilt the Temple of Zeus, developed many other buildings, added a festival

featuring athletic games, musical contests, and drama enacted in a theatre). A

wall was built around the oracle itself and the holy tree, as well as temples

to Dione and Heracles.

Hubble Finds Planet Orbiting Pair of Stars

Hubble Finds Planet Orbiting Pair of Stars

Two’s company, but three might not always be a crowd — at least in space.

Astronomers using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, and a trick of nature, have confirmed the existence of a planet orbiting two stars in the system OGLE-2007-BLG-349, located 8,000 light-years away towards the center of our galaxy.

The planet orbits roughly 300 million miles from the stellar duo, about the distance from the asteroid belt to our sun. It completes an orbit around both stars roughly every seven years. The two red dwarf stars are a mere 7 million miles apart, or 14 times the diameter of the moon’s orbit around Earth.

The Hubble observations represent the first time such a three-body system has been confirmed using the gravitational microlensing technique. Gravitational microlensing occurs when the gravity of a foreground star bends and amplifies the light of a background star that momentarily aligns with it. The particular character of the light magnification can reveal clues to the nature of the foreground star and any associated planets.

The three objects were discovered in 2007 by an international collaboration of five different groups: Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics (MOA), the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE), the Microlensing Follow-up Network (MicroFUN), the Probing Lensing Anomalies Network (PLANET), and the Robonet Collaboration. These ground-based observations uncovered a star and a planet, but a detailed analysis also revealed a third body that astronomers could not definitively identify.

“The ground-based observations suggested two possible scenarios for the three-body system: a Saturn-mass planet orbiting a close binary star pair or a Saturn-mass and an Earth-mass planet orbiting a single star,” explained David Bennett of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, the paper’s first author.

The sharpness of the Hubble images allowed the research team to separate the background source star and the lensing star from their neighbors in the very crowded star field. The Hubble observations revealed that the starlight from the foreground lens system was too faint to be a single star, but it had the brightness expected for two closely orbiting red dwarf stars, which are fainter and less massive than our sun. “So, the model with two stars and one planet is the only one consistent with the Hubble data,” Bennett said.

Bennett’s team conducted the follow-up observations with Hubble’s Wide Field Planetary Camera 2. “We were helped in the analysis by the almost perfect alignment of the foreground binary stars with the background star, which greatly magnified the light and allowed us to see the signal of the two stars,” Bennett explained.

Kepler has discovered 10 other planets orbiting tight binary stars, but these are all much closer to their stars than the one studied by Hubble.

Now that the team has shown that microlensing can successfully detect planets orbiting double-star systems, Hubble could provide an essential role in this new realm in the continued search for exoplanets.

The team’s results have been accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal.

Huge Jellyfish Sprite Lightning over the Caribbean

This is a copy and paste from the Nasa website spaceweather.com: 'A-BOMB' SPRITE OVER THE CARIBBEAN: On Sept. 18th, Frankie Lucena of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, photographed an enormous sprite over the Caribbean Sea. For a split-second, the sky was illuminated by a mushroom-shaped flash:Oscar van der Velde, a member of the Lightning Research Group at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, explains what Lucena photographed: "This type of sprite is often called 'jellyfish' or 'A-bomb,' and ranks as the largest type of sprite in both horizontal and vertical dimensions," he says. "It consists of a bright halo approximately 85 km above Earth's surface surrounding sprite elements with long tendrils reaching down as low as ~30 km above ground level." "This kind of sprite tends to be triggered by a very impulsive positive cloud-to-ground flash," van der Velde adds. The curious thing is, Lucena did not observe an instigating lightning bolt. Instead, just before the sprite appeared, he recorded a bright point-like flash of light. "Was it a cosmic ray hitting the camera?" wonders Lucena. Play the entire video to see the flash. Another possibility: The point-like flash could have been a cloud-to-ground strike mostly eclipsed by intervening clouds. If Lucena did photograph something new triggering a sprite, perhaps it shouldn't come as a big surprise. The field is relatively new. Although sprites have been seen for at least a century, most scientists did not believe they existed until after 1989 when sprites were photographed by cameras onboard the space shuttle. There is still much to learn.

Approaching the Universe’s origins

Credit:ESA/Hubble & NASA, RELICS

This intriguing image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows a massive galaxy cluster called PSZ2 G138.61-10.84, about six billion light-years away. Galaxies are not randomly distributed in space, but rather aggregated in groups, clusters and superclusters. The latter span over hundreds of millions of light-years and contain billions of galaxies.

Our own galaxy, for example, is part of the Local Group, which in turn is part of the giant Laniakea Supercluster. It was thanks to Hubble that we were able to study massive galactic superstructures such as the Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall; a giant galaxy cluster that contains billions of galaxies and extends 10 billion light-years across — making it the biggest known structure in the Universe.

This image was taken by Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide-Field Camera 3 as part of an observing programme called RELICS (Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey). RELICS imaged 41 massive galaxy clusters with the aim of finding the brightest distant galaxies for the forthcoming NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to study.

Bust of Neilos

2,000-year-old bust depicts Neilos, the Nile river god. Neilos appealed to

Egyptians and Greeks alike – he was the

Greek version of Hapy, the Egyptian personification of the annual Nile flood

that brought prosperity and fertility to the country. Neilos played a

significant role in one of the most popular festivals in Egypt, when the

beginning of the annual flood marked the Egyptian New Year.

bust was once mounted into a large decorative shield and adorned a temple in

the ancient Egyptian city of Canopus. It was discovered by underwater

archaeologists at the base of the wall on which

it once hung.

To save man people rocked the car on the subway.

Passengers and railway workers have teamed up to help the guy whose leg was stuck between car and platform.

The incident occurred in the city of Perth in Western Australia – at Stirling station. The boy slipped and his leg was trapped between the platform and the carriage. As soon as the driver has been warned. And attentive staff, passengers and the train station immediately rushed to the aid of man. Dozens of people took up the car and began to rock the trailer to free “hostages.” As a result, the guy was able to free his leg. After that, the train went to the destination.

Mayan ruins of Quirigua – Guatemala

Many ancient cultures believe their ancestors were visited by “star brothers” who came from the sky. This is one example of, what some believe, is a depiction of ancient advanced technology.

Quirigua was one of the smallest Mayan cities, but one of the most notable due to its splendid series of monuments. It was an autonomic capital and inhabited since the 2nd century AD, and flourished until the 10th century, when it was abandoned for unknown reasons.

The ancient stone buildings of the Carpathians

These stone structures differ from many megalithic buildings so that they are not collected from multiple blocks, and cut out of the rock or a huge stone.

Supposedly built during the 12th century AD, many of them could be used as a small home and small Christian chapel, in fact a small church, carved in stone.

Many inscriptions can be found on the Russian Cyrillic alphabet which is precisely related to the period after the 12th century.

It is not excluded that the inscriptions were made by those who adapted these structures under the religious needs after their builders of these stone structures left these lands, or killed.

However, the maximum age of such facilities in the Carpathians, no more than a thousand years.

Such buildings can be found not only in the forests of Romania, but also in the Ukrainian Carpathians, but these facilities are built one tribe.
