ANCIENT GREEK POTTERY:
THE pottery of ancient Greece from c. 1000 to c. 400 BCE provides not only some of the most distinctive vase shapes from antiquity but also some of the oldest and most diverse representations of the cultural beliefs and practices of the ancient Greeks. Further, pottery, with its durability (even when broken) and lack of appeal to treasure hunters, is one of the great archaeological survivors and is, therefore, an important tool for archaeologists and historians in determining the chronology of ancient Greece. Whatever their artistic and historical value though, the vast majority of Greek vases, despite now being dusty museum pieces, were actually meant for everyday use and, to paraphrase Arthur Lane, it is perhaps worth remembering that standing on a stone pavement and drenched with water, they would have once gleamed in the Mediterranean sun.
The clay (keramos) to produce pottery (kerameikos) was readily available throughout Greece, although the finest was Attic clay, with its high iron content giving an orange-red colour with a slight sheen when fired and the pale buff of Corinth. Clay was generally prepared and refined in settling tanks so that different consistencies of material could be achieved depending on the vessel types to be made with it.

FLANN Sinna (r. 879-916 CE) was a High King of Ireland from the Kingdom of Mide (Meath) and a member of the Clann Cholmain, a branch of the Southern Ui Neill dynasty. His name is pronounced “Flahn Shinna” and means “Flann of the Shannon”. He is best known as an effective high king of Ireland who consolidated the power of the Kingdom of Meath while honoring his obligations to other kingdoms, famous for his victory at the Battle of Ballaghmoon in 908 CE, and erecting monuments to commemorate his achievements; most notably the Cross of the Scriptures at the Abbey of Clonmacnoise.
He was an important patron of this religious community and is also responsible for the cathedral (also known as Temple McDermot) and possibly the South Cross still extant at the site. This patronage seems at odds with accounts from the Annals of the Kingdom of Ireland (also known as The Annals of the Four Masters, c. 1616 CE) which report that Flann Sinna was responsible for the sack of a number of churches and monasteries throughout Ireland, and this has led to criticism of his reign by later writers.

Mystery of superior Leeuwenhoek microscope solved after 350 years
Researchers from TU Delft and Rijksmuseum Boerhaave have solved an age-old mystery surrounding Antonie van Leeuwenhoek’s microscopes. A unique collaboration at the interface between culture and science has proved conclusively that the linen trader and amateur scholar from Delft ground and used his own thin lenses.
Considering the unrivaled quality of the microscopic images produced by Van Leeuwenhoek, this was always thought to be practically impossible. The prevailing view was that grinding small lenses of such high quality by hand was simply a bridge too far. A new research method helped to solve the mystery—namely, using a neutron bundle from the TU Delft research reactor. The TU Delft Reactor Institute uses radiation to conduct research on materials, for energy and health care purposes.
The microscopes manufactured by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) featured a single lens and a spike upon which the sample was skewered. The microscopes of Van Leeuwenhoek’s contemporaries magnified objects approximately 30 times, but his microscopes were up to 10 times more powerful. How he managed this feat remained a mystery up until now. Was there truth in his claim that he had invented an advanced method of glass-blowing, as he revealed to a group of German nobles in a rare moment of candour in 1711? Or was his precise grinding responsible for the quality of the lens?

Designing a new material for improved ultrasound
Development of a theoretical basis for ultrahigh piezoelectricity in ferroelectric materials led to a new material with twice the piezo response of any existing commercial ferroelectric ceramics, according to an international team of researchers from Penn State, China and Australia.
Piezoelectricity is the material property at the heart of medical ultrasound, sonar, active vibration control and many sensors and actuators. A piezoelectric material has the ability to mechanically deform when an electric voltage is applied or to generate electric charge when a mechanical force is applied.
Adding small amounts of a carefully selected rare earth material, samarium, to a high-performance piezoelectric ceramic called lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (PMN-PT) dramatically increases its piezo performance, the researchers report in Nature Materials this week. This materials-by-design strategy will be useful in designing materials for other applications as well, the team believes.
“This is not the typical way to develop new materials,” said the team’s co-corresponding author, Long-Qing Chen, Donald W. Hamer Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, professor of mathematics, and professor of engineering science and mechanics, Penn State. “The majority of existing useful materials are discovered by trial-and-error experiments. But here we designed and synthesized a new piezoelectric ceramic guided by theory and simulations.”

Study suggests helium plays a ‘nanny’ role in forming stable chemical compounds under high pressure
Helium, the second lightest element in the universe, has a variety of uses, from keeping balloons afloat to cooling superconducting magnets.
It is also a noble gas—so labeled because it was long believed to be “too aloof” to react with the other elements on the periodic table.
Now, however, a team of scientists led by California State University, Northridge (CSUN) chemistry professor Maosheng Miao, and including University at Buffalo chemistry professor Eva Zurek, has provided a theoretical explanation of how helium may be capable of forming stable solid compounds—the myriad combinations of chemical elements that create all kinds of materials.
The research also suggests that the gas—whose supply on Earth has been decreasing—may be found in the Earth’s mantle, a place once considered unlikely since there was no known chemistry to keep helium there.
The new study, “Reactivity of He with ionic compounds under high pressure,” was published on March 5 in Nature Communications. The work was inspired by a 2017 study in which a different research team reported synthesizing a stable compound from helium and sodium, an element in table salt, under high pressure.

Weird Superconductor Leads Double Life
Understanding strontium titanate’s odd behavior will aid efforts to develop materials that conduct electricity with 100 percent efficiency at higher temperatures.
Until about 50 years ago, all known superconductors were metals. This made sense, because metals have the largest number of loosely bound “carrier” electrons that are free to pair up and flow as electrical current with no resistance and 100 percent efficiency – the hallmark of superconductivity.
Then an odd one came along – strontium titanate, the first oxide material and first semiconductor found to be superconducting. Even though it doesn’t fit the classic profile of a superconductor – it has very few free-to-roam electrons – it becomes superconducting when conditions are right, although no one could explain why.
Now scientists have probed the superconducting behavior of its electrons in detail for the first time. They discovered it’s even weirder than they thought. Yet that’s good news, they said, because it gives them a new angle for thinking about what’s known as “high temperature” superconductivity, a phenomenon that could be harnessed for a future generation of perfectly efficient power lines, levitating trains and other revolutionary technologies.

Making monitors brighter: Controlling the color of OLEDs
Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are used in smartphones and televisions to facilitate the high-contrast display of colours. Conjugated polymers are also often employed as organic semiconductors in such diodes. Researchers at the University of Bayreuth have found out how the spatial structure of these polymers can be used to control the colours of the OLEDs and help to increase the brightness of monitors. They have now presented this previously unknown mechanism in the scientific journal PNAS.
Polymers with a backbone: spatial structures determine the colour of light
Polymers that are well-suited for use in organic light-emitting diodes play a central role in the new research findings. Thanks to the chain formed by connecting molecular building blocks, they possess a backbone. If the polymers are then exposed to a laser beam, they absorb the light and store it as excitation energy. This energy spreads along the backbone. Shortly after that, it is released by emission of light.

IBARAKI, Osaka Prefecture–Shards of 2,000-year-old earthenware unearthed at an archaeological site here depict a group of wooden structures that are the first such clearly decipherable representations to be found in Japan.
The artifact, discovered at the Nakagawara site, offers precious clues about the way settlements were built and rituals carried out during the Yayoi Pottery Culture period (300 B.C.A.D. 300), researchers said.
The discovery was announced March 23 by the Ibaraki municipal education board.
Officials said nine shards of unglazed earthenware were found during a yearlong excavation project that started in November 2016.
When pieced together, the artifact measured 21.5 centimeters by 25.5 cm. Read more.
This Medieval Mother Had a Gruesome ‘Coffin Birth’ After Medieval Brain...
In a cramped stone grave beneath the medieval town of Imola, Italy, a 1,300-year-old woman lies dead with a hole in her skull and a fetus between her legs.
The fetus, now just a collection of tiny bones trailing below the mother’s skeletal pelvis, was likely delivered in the grave through a phenomenon called “coffin birth” — essentially, when an unborn child is forced out of its mother’s womb by posthumous gases after both mother and child have died.
It’s a rare sight in archaeology — but rarer still might be the peculiar circular wound bored into the mother’s skull.
Archaeologists from the University of Ferrara and University of Bologna attempted to unwind the mystery of this mother’s and child’s deaths in a new study published in the May 2018 issue of the journal World Neurosurgery. According to the researchers, these remarkable skeletal remains may present a rare Middle Ages example of a primitive brain-surgery technique called trepanation. This procedure involved drilling or scraping a hole into the patient’s skull to relieve pressure and (theoretically) a whole host of medical ailments. Explanation: What that bright red spot between the Lagoon and Trifid Nebulas? Mars. This gorgeous color deep-sky photograph captured the red planet passing between the two notable nebulas – cataloged by the 18th century cosmic registrar Charles Messier as M8 and M20. M20 (upper right of center), the Trifid Nebula, presents a striking contrast in red/blue colors and dark dust lanes. Across the bottom right is the expansive, alluring red glow of M8, the Lagoon Nebula. Both nebulae are a few thousand light-years distant. By comparison, temporarily situated between them both, is the dominant “local” celestial beacon Mars. Taken last week, the red planet was only about 10 light-minutes away.

EARLY CHRISTIANITY:
EMERGING from a small sect of Judaism in the 1st century CE, early Christianity absorbed many of the shared religious, cultural, and intellectual traditions of the Greco-Roman world. In traditional histories of Western culture, the emergence of Christianity in the Roman Empire is known as “the triumph of Christianity.” This refers to the victory of Christian beliefs over the allegedly false beliefs and practices of paganism. However, it is important to recognize that Christianity did not arise in a vacuum.
Jews claimed an ancient tradition with law codes for daily life (the Laws of Moses) and revelations from their god through Prophets. While recognizing various powers in the universe, Jews nevertheless differed from their neighbors by only offering worship (sacrifices) to their one god, Yahweh. After suffering several national defeats by the Assyrians in 722 BCE and the Babylonians in 587 BCE, their prophets claimed that God would eventually restore Israel to its former independence. In those ‘final days’ (eschaton in Greek), God would designate a descendant of David, an ‘anointed one’ (Messiah in Hebrew, or Christos in Greek), who would lead the righteous against the enemies of Israel. God would then establish a new Eden, which came to be known as ‘the kingdom of God.’

Противосу́меречные лучи́ (англ. Anticrepuscular rays) — расходящиеся веером лучи, наблюдающиеся на закате дня со стороны, противоположной солнцу (то есть, на востоке). Противосумеречные лучи по своей природе и визуально очень подобны сумеречным лучам (англ. crepuscular rays), но в отличие от них видны со стороны, противоположной солнцу.
Солнечные лучи распространяются по прямым линиям, однако вследствие проекций этих линий на сферической атмосфере Земли создаются дуги. Следовательно, прямолинейные сумеречные лучи, исходящие от Солнца, могут повторно сходиться в «противосолнечной» точке.

Противосумеречные лучи наиболее хорошо видны в моменты восхода и заката солнца. Противосумеречные лучи намного менее ярки, чем сумеречные лучи. Это объясняется тем, что для сумеречных лучей, обозреваемых на той стороне неба, где присутствует солнце, атмосферное свечение рассеивается и делает лучи видимыми под малыми углами (смотри Mie theory (англ.)).
Хотя кажется, будто противосумеречные лучи сходятся на точке позади солнца, однако эта конвергенция (схождение) фактически является иллюзией. На самом деле солнечные лучи возле Земли параллельны друг другу и явление их веерного расхождения обусловлено перспективой. Со стороны Солнца это кажется естественным, так как визуально лучи как бы исходят от Солнца, а вот с противоположной стороны, хотя суть явления остаётся той же самой, явление выглядит парадоксальным. Аналогичный эффект наблюдается при взгляде вдоль железнодорожных рельс, если наблюдатель расположен по центру между ними – визуально они сходятся.

Both videos can be seen as a kind of an unidentified object enters the dense layers of the atmosphere.
The first object was very large and split into many pieces during re-entry.
But it’s not coming off the satellite orbit or orbital debris.
Such objects are tracked, for their time and place of fall is known in advance.
Officials as a starting base and astronomical association do not expect any of decay of orbital debris.
It was a UFO that slowly descended from orbit and began to burn in the atmosphere, or it can be astroid or a portion thereof, as in the day he had to cross the Earth’s orbit.
The second object was very small and rapidly burned in the atmosphere.

Meteorite or shooting star does not have the meaning that has settled in the minds of the population.
Meteorite – the definition of the word, signifying the fall of a celestial body on the surface of another large celestial body, planet or moon.
The word does not describe the origin of the meteorite body, it is a kind of an unidentified object, or as we call it a UFO, that is, Unidentified Flying Object.

На обоих видео видно, как некий неопознанный объект входит в плотные слои атмосферы.
Первый объект был очень крупным и распался на множество частей при входе в атмосферу.
Но это не сход спутника с орбиты или орбитального мусора.
Подобные объекты отслеживаются, о их времени и месте падения известно заранее.
Официальные источники как пусковые базы и астрономические ассоциации не ожидали никаких сходов с орбиты орбитального мусора.
Это был НЛО который очень медленно сошёл с орбиты и начал гореть в атмосфере, или быть может это астроид или его части, так как в этот день он должен был пересечь орбиту Земли.
Второй объект был очень мал и быстро сгорел в атмосфере.
