The puzzle of the early Corded Ware grave

In a recent paper and talk, archaeologist Kristian Kristiansen mentions a very early Corded Ware (CW) burial in Tiefbrunn, Germany; one of a few that contain a hammer-headed bone pin, like those found in Yamnaya and Catacomb graves on the steppe, particularly in the North Caucasus region.

Sr isotope ratios suggest that the older man was non-local, while the young man and the child may be locals. The skulls of all three individuals exhibited signs of severe trauma and they had probably suffered violent deaths. … The grave goods consisted of only a flint blade and a hammer-headed bone pin, laid down beside the older male. Such pins are rare in the CW of Central Europe, but common in the Pontic Steppe region where they occur in a variety of forms until they disappear around 2600 BC [38].

All three individuals from this grave had their genomes sequenced as part of The Rise project and were labeled RISE434, RISE435 and RISE436. This is how they cluster in my Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of ancient West Eurasia.

As far as I can tell, based on the Sr isotope ratios from Sjögren K-G, Price TD, Kristiansen K 2016, RISE436 is the older man with the pin and RISE434 the young man (see here). But if so, what is the likely non-local RISE436 doing as the most western of the Corded Ware samples sequenced to date? And why are the potentially local RISE434 and RISE435 so much more Yamnaya-like than him? My interpretation of these results is that RISE436 was the descendant of a proto-Corded Ware male migrant from the steppe, and that his mother may have been of pre-Corded Ware farmer stock from Central or East-Central Europe. Note that this individual belongs to the Eastern European Y-chromosome haplogroup R1a, Western European (?) mitochondrial haplogroup U5b1c2, and on the plot above clusters almost exactly half-way between Yamnaya and early European farmers (Europe_EN and Europe_MN). On the other hand, the young man and infant may derive from a more fully developed Corded Ware community in Central Europe, largely made up of second and third generation migrants from the steppe. Any other ideas? Citations… Sjögren K-G, Price TD, Kristiansen K (2016) Diet and Mobility in the Corded Ware of Central Europe. THE BERLIN ZOO FLAK TOWERS:
Constructed in 1941 The  zoo flak towers walls were 2.5 meters thick and the roof was 1.5 meters. Its primary role was as a gun platform to protect the government building district of Berlin.

Along with numerous deadly 88mm anti aircraft guns, the facility’s main armament were four twin mounted 12.8 cm FlaK 40’s. The guns were loaded electrically with the ammunition fed into hoppers.

The complex itself was so well stocked with supplies and ammunition that when Soviet forces entered Berlin in 1945, the military garrison to a man believed that if the city fell, they could hold out for at least a year if need be.

As the Russians advanced inexorably towards the center of Berlin, The tower’s anti aircraft guns completely obliterated approaching Soviet armor, providing much needed support to the 10,000 German defenders which had retreated to within in the Government district.

Both towers resisted all attempts to destroy them by air and ground attack. The Soviets even used their largest artillery pieces, 203 mm howitzers firing at near point blank range but the tower walls would not crumble.

On April 30th, the tower commander, Colonel Haller arranged the surrender of the troops inside. He promised to capitulate at midnight and the Soviets agreed.

However this was just a ruse to allow the 500 strong  garrison to make a breakout attempt through the Soviet lines once the Russians had let down there guard.

Shortly before midnight they made their move catching the enemy unawares with most succeding in escaping the city.

Ballowall Barrow Photo Set 2, St. Just. Cornwall, 28.12.17.

This second set of images highlights the various cist and burial site remains in the complex Bronze Age barrow. Thought to have been in use over a period of a thousand years or more, this funerary site contains various cist caskets. Some however, like that in image 6, have been excavated and possibly reshaped. The work of Victorian antiquarians means that we are no longer able to ascertain the true structure of this complex and mysterious site.

Ghost of child filmed in the Tower of London

A mother-of-two claims a photo she took at the Tower of London could have been ‘photobombed’ by the ghost of 12-year-old Edward V – ‘solving’ a 500-year-old murder mystery in the process.

Mary Ryan, 40, was taking snaps of weapons on display at the historic attraction but failed to notice the face that appeared in the reflection until she returned home to Liverpool.

The hairdresser believes the ghostly face of a young boy could be that of Edward V, who was sent to the Tower along with nine-year-old brother Richard, by their uncle Richard III in 1483.

It is widely assumed they were murdered as the duo were never seen again – but Mary claims her picture could be the first image ever caught of the tragic young prince.

Sir Thomas More, the 16th century statesman and historian, claimed the two princes were smothered by their uncle and buried within the tower – though it was never proved and their disappearance is often cited as one of the world’s greatest murder mysteries.
