Etna blows steam rings

The view of Etna’s summit seems to reflect a mountain at ease with itself, as extraordinary rings of steam and ash have been puffed into the Sicilian sky. It’s as if the volcano is sitting back and relaxing for a while.

We covered this lovely arsenic sulphide mineral some time ago (http://tinyurl.com/klmnq35), but in its massive ketchup and mustard form associated with orpiment. We just had to share this cluster of gemmy red crystals with you so you could appreciate its variety of form.

A post shared by National Geographic (@natgeo) on

natgeoVideo @ladzinski / ▶️🔊 Colombia’s #SantaMarta mountains is a steep and rugged jungle environment, home to an extraordinary range of diverse endemic and migratory birds. I was lucky to spend 3 days cozily nestled on the side of the mountain at an old farm house. This white horse here was one of the residents, a borderline feral animal living a good life with plenty of grazing territory. He primarily lived alone, away from the other horses on a nearby pasture, but on our last morning he had a visitor. As soon as the 2 were put together they warily checked each other out and then burst into highly energetic playing. I was fortunate enough to roll on some of the interaction.

Extremely cold arctic air moved in to the Kansas City, MO and surrounding areas overnight and early this morning. People commuting to work and walking around the city were bundled up to stay as warm as they possibly could with temperatures only hovering around 0F. The National weather service issued a Wind Chill advisory for dangerous windchill temperatures across the region. Wind chill readings were between -10 and -15f this morning. Rough cut. No narration. Shot by Caleb Elliott.

After only reaching a high temperature of 2F on Tuesday we bottomed out at -16F on Wednesday morning at NWS Coop Observation Site Stanley 4W that I operate. Shortly after 7 am temperatures in Oelwein (pronounced "O-Wine"), in Northeast Iowa, were at -14F as seen by the Public Library thermometer in downtown Oelwein. Oelwein is located a few miles northwest of NWS Coop Stanley 4W. More snow is on the way on Wednesday night into Thursday and by this weekend the high temperature in this part of the state will struggle to reach 0F on Saturday.

wayfaring:

I’ve seen these all over the world, it’s so fascinating. Today’s #DecemberRewind takes us to Tenerife (Spain) and to Pangong Tso in Ladakh (India). These places thousands and thousands of miles from each other, but modern people in both stack rocks up for luck. And I’ve seen these little stacks on at least half of all the trips I’ve ever made, if not more. Pretty cool, right? | ig: wayfar.ing

Bentonite

Bentonite beds are clay deposits that form from the alteration of volcanic ash. Explosive volcanic eruptions can eject tons of ash and other pyroclastic material up into the atmosphere, eventually falling back to earth, covering the ground in a layer of ash. Volcanic ash is comprised of a combination of vitric (glassy) and lithic particles which are less than 2mm in diameter. In large eruptions this material can cover hundreds to thousands of square kilometres.

ANCIENT GREEK INVENTIONS:

THE ancient Greeks are often credited with building the foundations upon which all western cultures are built, and this impressive accolade stems from their innovative contributions to a wide range of human activities, from sports to medicine, architecture to democracy. Like any other culture before or since, the Greeks learnt from the past, adapted good ideas they came across when they met other cultures, and developed their own brand new ideas. Here are just some of the ways the ancient Greeks have uniquely contributed to world culture, many of which are still going strong today.

Just about any city in the western world today has examples of Greek architecture on its streets, especially in its biggest and most important public buildings. Perhaps the most common features invented by the Greeks still around today are the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns which hold up roofs and adorn facades in theatres, courthouses, and government buildings across the globe. The Greeks used these architectural orders primarily for their temples, many of which are still standing today despite earthquake, fire, and cannon shots – the Parthenon, completed in 432 BCE, is the biggest and most famous example.
