natgeo Video: @cristinamittermeier // Galicia, a coastal community in Spain, has over 1,660 km (1,030 mi) of coastline, including its offshore islands and islets. I spent some time in Baiona, on the outlet of the Vigo Bay, at the end of last month, documenting sustainable fishing practices. Magic is never far away when living life near the ocean. On one particular day, perhaps because of abundant plankton in the water, a large pod of dolphins was spotted just off the coast. The women, harvesting Gooseneck barnacles in the intertidal zones said they had never seen so many at once before. We followed the pod for about 25 minutes.

Ask Ethan: How Sure Are We That The Universe Is 13.8 Billion Years Old?
“Lord Kelvin estimated the age of the Sun between 20 and 40 million years because his model didn’t (couldn’t) include quantum mechanics and relativity. How probable is it we’re doing a similar mistake when looking at the universe at large?”
For all of human history, the biggest questions have fascinated us. Where did the Universe come from? How old is it? And what is its ultimate fate? Once relegated to the realm of theologians, poets, and philosophers, science has brought us closer than ever to the answers. But scientific revolutions have occurred before, in many cases significantly changing the answers to these and other inquiries. How certain are we that this won’t happen again? When it comes to the question of the age of the Universe, presently estimated at 13.8 billion years, there are many uncertainties that could come into play. Dark energy could evolve over time, fundamental constants might not be constant, or today’s fundamental particles might be broken up into smaller components. Additionally, we could have flaws in the expansion rate or composition of our Universe, or even alter General Relativity.

Geology field trip with the University of Edinburgh, School of GeoSciences to Barns Ness on the Lothian Coast. We studied limestone, sandstone beds along with a long coal seem with fossil soil. We saw plenty of fossils and trace fossils, including feeding traces, corals and tree prints. This formation was deposited in the Carboniferous period.

A yearly ritual
The astronomical year is full of cycles, most determinable with mathematical rigidity, but some few dependent upon human whim, including the timing of the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2017 awards ceremony, held at the Royal Greenwich Observatory. Their choices for 2017 were recently announced, and there is an ongoing exhibition on site of the prints. The first in ourselection is of a glowing aurora shot at dusk from a plane somewhere over the Russian Far East near Novosibirsk. This wasn’t a random shot, the solar storm was known to be on the way, and the photographer made sure he got a ringside seat. Our second shows the moon setting over one of the globe’s great basaltic shield volcanoes, Mauna Kea in Hawaii, with several large telescopes capping the edifice (the UK Infrared Telescope, the University of Hawaii 2.2m telescope, Gemini North, and Canada France Hawaii Telescope).
