New article: cooling ID-COOLING FROSTFLOW+ 280: step forward



In early 2016 we tested the liquid cooling ID-COOLING FROSTFLOW 240L, which refers to the DLC maintenance-free type, which means it has all the advantages and disadvantages of such systems. Continuing to develop this series of CPU cooling, in 2017, the company released several new models, which differ from each other in size, with fans and the presence or absence of illumination. The flagship of the new range was a version of the ID-COOLING FROSTFLOW+ 280 with a larger 280 mm radiator and two 140 mm fans, as well as several other less significant improvements.




What is it, and how changed the best factory-LSS ID-COOLING and what is its effectiveness compared to the best air cooler, and we will tell you in today’s article.

#Packaging equipment


Despite the increased dimensions of the liquid cooling box ID-COOLING FROSTFLOW+ 280 became more compact than its predecessors, and is now decorated in orange and black colors.



On the lateral and back sides of the box are specifications lists the supported platforms and the dimensions and briefly describes the benefits of the system.














 



Inside the main box is placed a basket with compartments of porous cardboard. It contains the system itself, its fans and the accessories included in the package.



Among the last universal reinforcement plate, mounting for AMD processors, screws and bushing, hub fan, thermal grease ID TG11 and installation instructions.



It is not surprising the lack of included mounts for Intel, since they are already installed on the waterblock.


Like most products, one way or another associated with computers, ID-COOLING FROSTFLOW+ 280 produced in China. It is noteworthy that the recommended system cost is 85 US$, while its predecessor – ID-COOLING FROSTFLOW 240L – recommended to sell at $ 99. Quite unexpected and a pleasant price reduction. Add that to the system three-year warranty.


#Design features


Compared to the predecessor model, ID-COOLING 240L FROSTFLOW, a new ID-COOLING FROSTFLOW+ 280 transformed. And it’s not only the size of the radiator with the fans and longer tubes. In this system, almost all other components. Look at the radiator and tube and compare with the previous model.



The radiator immediately draw attention to themselves other ends (they increased in size) and modified the side panel coated with the name of the manufacturer. Its dimensions are 312 × 138 × 27 mm, it is made all from aluminium — copper models for the same amount are not supposed to.



Connecting the pump and the radiator pipe became longer (380 mm vs. 305) and thicker (outer diameter is 12 mm against 10 FROSTFLOW 240L). In addition, they are now softer, but the likelihood of kinking is minimized due to the synthetic coating. And now they look much more aesthetically rough rubber hoses.



I can assume that the area of the new radiator liquid cooling system well increased, although the exact to calculate, as you know, is not possible. On both sides of the radiator there are eight thread holes to install fans.



The design of the radiator there are 14 flat channels, which moves the refrigerant. The distance between them is 8 mm, and it is filled with perforated gofrolist of aluminum.



The thickness of the working fluid of the radiator is only 15 mm, i.e. the minimum for radiators DLC. Apparently, for this reason, the engineers ID-COOLING (or some other company that makes radiators for ID-COOLING) did not hesitate to make the most dense radiator – 18 fins per inch (FPI).

On the other end they enter the pump and waterblock and has swivel fittings to facilitate the laying of the hoses inside the case and minimizing the likelihood of excesses.



But in terms of pump, changes little — unless there’s another top cover from a different light.



In terms of design and operating parameters it is the same pump that was used in version ID-COOLING FROSTFLOW 240L.



Recall that its performance is claimed at 96 litres per hour, the height of rise of water is 1.2 m, rotor speed – 2300 rpm noise level – no more than 25 dBA, and the ceramic pump bearing should serve not less than five and a half years of continuous work.


The waterblock is also the same: copper, microchannel, with the distance between the channels is not more than 0.2 mm and a height of the ribs is about 5 mm.



The base of the waterblock is protected by a film coated with a mandatory warning about deleting before installing.



The processing quality of the contact surface of the waterblock is very decent, and its evenness and does reference. Let’s see what mark we got on far imperfect heat spreader of the processor LGA2011-v3.



A large radiator with large fans. In the case of FROSTFLOW+ 280 is a new model ID-COOLING WF-14025 size 140 × 140 × 25 mm with black bezel and white odinnadtsatikilometrovy impeller supported on four pillars.



The rotational speed of the impeller is regulated by pulse-width modulation in the range from 800 to 1600 rpm Being designed for high static pressure (remember what system thick radiator?), they need to develop 2,14 mm H2O at maximum speed for the 140 mm models very nice. The air flow can reach 76.8 per CFM, the noise level from 16.8 to 32.6 dB.


Technical characteristics of the system stated that the fans use hydrodynamic bearings, but their lifespan is, unfortunately, not given. But there is electrical: 12 VDC, 0.30 A, 3.6 W.



Based on measurements we found that each fan at maximum speed consumes only 3.57 wt, as indicated in the specifications (rare, by the way).


Each fan kit silicone washers on the 3M adhesive tape to reduce vibration when mounted on the radiator. Assembled system looks like.



Cable length of each fan is 415 mm and 10 mm adds a small Y-shaped adapter, which can be connected to a single connector for the fan on the motherboard.


#Compatibility and installation


ID-COOLING FROSTFLOW+ 280 is compatible with platforms Intel LGA775/115(x)/1366/2011(v3)/2066 and AMD Socket AM4/AM3(+)/AM2(+)/FM1(2+), i.e. can be installed on any modern fee, except boards for AMD Ryzen Threadripper. To keep the system compatible with the system block, it must have two adjacent seats in the 140-mm fan and a 60 mm stock thickness in this area. The benefit of such buildings is now in abundance, and LSS radiator with fans can be placed not only on the top or the rear but on the front wall of the housing. The installation instructions can be downloaded from the official website, but since the procedure is exactly the same as in case of other maintenance-free DLC, it is unlikely it will cause any trouble even a beginner user.


The water block is pressed against the processor with thumb screws which need to fasten to the studs in the base plate of the connector.













 



In our case, the radiator fans we have fixed on the upper wall of the case, focusing them air flow on blowing.



The pump hooked to the fan connector enhanced power on the motherboard, and the fans to the controller. Now let’s check how the system will show itself in action.
